GUWAHATI: Even as India and China exchange claims and counter claims on Arunachal Pradesh, the ruling Indian National Congress party in the state has demanded opening up of the Indo-China border along the state as the only option for shifting the focus from military interest to economic development of both the countries.
Talking to Times News Network from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Habung Payeng said, "Chinese incursion is a serious threat to the entire country.
We are part of India and this cannot be changed overnight. We demand that the border, which is sealed, should be opened and people from both sides be allowed to move across freely and trade."
According to the spokesman, opening up trade routes with China through Arunachal Pradesh would be more viable than the proposed route through Sikkim. "China should improve its relationship with India and stress on economic development instead of mounting military tension."
Payeng said that that the state government has been repeatedly informing the centre about the Chinese incursion. "This time there are reports of the incursion about 8 km inside the Indian territory in Upper Subansiri and Kameng Kumi districts. Last time security forces had discovered Chinese-built mule tracks near the Kayela Pass in the Dibang Valley district, bordering Tibet.
He added that the party would be meeting soon to discuss this issue and chalk out a strategy to check these tensions.
